How to make a frequency table and histogram in Google Sheets
A histogram counts how many values fall into each range (bin). Example: the 20 exam scores from the descriptive statistics guide, with bin upper limits 60, 70, 80 and 90.
With the Histogram tool
- Put the bin limits in a column, for example
C1:C5with a header. - In StatPak choose Histogram. Input range
A1:A21, Bin rangeC1:C5, tick Labels and Cumulative percentage. - Click Run.
| Bin | Frequency | Cumulative % |
| 60 | 1 | 5.00% |
| 70 | 5 | 30.00% |
| 80 | 8 | 70.00% |
| 90 | 4 | 90.00% |
| More | 2 | 100.00% |
Each bin counts values greater than the previous limit and up to and including its own limit. More counts everything above the last limit. Tick Pareto to get a second copy sorted from most to least frequent.
With FREQUENCY
=FREQUENCY(A2:A21, C2:C5) returns the same counts, including the final "More" count, as a column that spills down. To chart it, select the bins and counts and choose Insert, Chart, Column chart. Sheets also has a built-in Histogram chart type that picks bins for you.
